What You Will Do

The Pediatrician in Chief (PiC) provides representation for medical leaders in the areas of Pediatric Medicine, including the general medical/hospitalist service, the pediatric medical specialties and subspecialties, as well as groups jointly served by the PiC. The PiC serves as the administrative supervisor of all Medical Directors/Division Chiefs that have responsibilities in the aforementioned areas of expertise.  Working with other administrative officers of SFCH the PiC strives to maintain a collaborative atmosphere between all clinical services with the goal of supporting the vision and overall mission of the SFCH where applicable.  Working with the President of SFCH as well as the Vice President, Patient Care Services and others, the PiC supports an administrative means to ensure such collaboration with the goal of excellence in patient care, teaching, and the SFCH’s quadruple aim.

Definitions and Areas of Responsibility

  1. Leadership in Patient Care – the PiC provides leadership in areas of patient care and academic efforts, consistent with the goals and mission of SFCH. The PiC provides leadership, vision, and management in accomplishing patient care and service mission and goals.  In this respect, the PiC serves as the advocate for all of the pediatric providers who practice within SFCH, but also as a fair-minded advocate for the hospital and as a trusted advisor to the rest of the administrative team.   As part of the pediatric executive management team, he/she provides “clinical vision” for the organization and advises in the development of medical services in alignment with the SFCH Strategic Plan.  The PiC is an integral member of the pediatric administrative leadership team.  He/she works closely with the President, Vice President of Patient Care Services, Director of Quality/Patient Safety, and other Hospital Directors and members of the administrative team to assure effective administration of SFCH. 
  2. Provides consultation to members of the medical staff, as indicated.
  3. Participates in quality and outcomes measures, high reliability initiatives, evidence based medicine practices, and peer review in order to ensure the highest quality of medical care consistent with high reliability organization principles.
  4. Participates in the SFCH Executive Operations Group and as a member of the SFCH Executive Leadership Team for administrative and medical staff matters.
  5. Participates in recruitment of physicians and other key positions for SFCH.
  6. Participates in issues relating to provider conduct and practice.
  7. Participates in the development of continuing medical education (CME) and other educational programs for the medical staff.
  8. Represents the organization to outside groups, as appropriate.
  9. Participates in medical staff and hospital committees and task forces as appointed.
  10. Participates in SFCH long-range and strategic planning.
  11. Assists in prioritizing capital equipment purchases after investigation of need and review of data gathered relative to such purchases.
  12. As a medical physician expert, participates in national pediatric initiatives to improve the quality of pediatric patient care. 

What You Will Need

Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics or equivalent in good standing and with at least ten (10) years of clinical practice experience.

Recognized as a leader in clinical practice, education, research and/or as a physician leader.

Training and experience in financial operations, leadership management, and medical staff functions.

 Demonstrated success in recruiting, mentoring, and supporting colleagues, students, residents, and other trainees.
